The Experimental Research Funder's Handbook (RoRI Working Paper No.6)
This Handbook aims to provide a practical resource for funders looking to move further or faster down the experimental path.
New Funding Scheme: SNSF Starting Grants 2022
The SNSF Starting Grants 2022 target researchers who wanted to apply for a 2022 ERC Starting Grant or for an SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship. Consequently, there will be no Eccellenza call 2022.

Funding Agency's Reviewers Were Biased Against Scientists with Novel Ideas
Study of Swiss agency is among the first to examine how proposals by unorthodox scientists fared.
Gender Monitoring: How Women Fare in SNSF Project Funding
The Swiss research landscape suffers from a chronic underrepresentation of women. This can also be seen in the share of women applying for funding at the SNSF. But how did this share evolve over time? And have women been less successful to raise funds?

Imaginary Carrot or Effective Fertiliser? A Rejoinder on Funding and Productivity
Imaginary Carrot or Effective Fertiliser? A Rejoinder on Funding and Productivity
The question of whether and to what extent research funding enables researchers to be more productive is a crucial one. In their recent work, Mariethoz et al. (Scientometrics, 2021. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11192-020-03.855-1 ) claim that there is no significant relationship between project-based research funding and bibliometric productivity measures and conclude that this is the result of inappropriate allocation mechanisms. In this rejoinder, we argue that such claims are not supported by the data and analyses reported in the article.
How Much Money Does Switzerland Invest in Research and Development?
How Much Money Does Switzerland Invest in Research and Development?
Every year, the SNSF receives around one billion francs from the federal government. In 2019, a total of 22.9 billion Swiss francs was available for R&D in Switzerland. The country ranks seventh in terms GDP share spent on R&D.
Indonesia's Science Super-Agency Must Earn Researchers' Trust
The drastic shake-up of the country's science system is intended to boost innovation, but there are concerns about political interference in the new centralized agency.
The SNSF Also Funds Indirect Research Costs of Universities
Since 2009, the SNSF has financed a portion of the indirect research costs incurred by SNSF-funded projects at research institutions. In 2021, 102 million Swiss francs are available for these "overhead" costs.
Novel Researchers Have a Lower Chance of Winning Funding
Swiss programme favours mainstream work, but unconventional applicants aren't deterred, say Charles Ayoubi and colleagues.

Not What You Know, but Whom You Know? Study of ERC Stirs Old Scientific Controversy
A new study of grants awarded to early-career researchers by Europe's premier science agency is reviving an old controversy over the way governments decide which scientists get research money, and which do not.
How Scientists Are Embracing NFTs
Is a trend of auctioning non-fungible tokens based on scientific data a fascinating art fad, an environmental disaster or the future of monetized genomics?
Are Women Submitting Fewer Grant Proposals?
Studies and surveys confirm that during the COVID-19 pandemic, women's workload at home has increased. Does that mean women researchers are also submitting fewer proposals to the SNSF? Analyses show that, with one exception, their share has remained stable.
Towards Inclusive Funding Practices for Early Career Researchers
Towards Inclusive Funding Practices for Early Career Researchers
Implementing changes to promote a fairer distribution of funding is necessary to improve career prospects and to drive excellence in scientific research.
Research Lobbies Lock Horns with Science Publishers over Open Access
Research Lobbies Lock Horns with Science Publishers over Open Access
Nearly 900 universities, research organisations, and funding agencies want science publishers to be more transparent and abide by open access rules, after scientists complained their submissions are rejected if they apply a public copyright licence to accepted manuscripts.
Swiss Funder Draws Lots to Make Grant Decisions
The Swiss National Science Foundation hopes to eliminate bias when choosing between applications of similar quality.

Research Funding in Focus: Even More Transparent Thanks to Data Stories
The SNSF meticulously examines its funding activities. From now on, it will publish these analyses on its data portal. To kick things off, Open Access, ERC grants and women scientists during the pandemic are in focus.
